Wizard Trail

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Upper portion of Wizard Trail is pretty steep, but without drop-offs or exposure one may expect after seeing Coyote Wall (romann)

Description

NOTE:Not much of the Wizard Trail can be hiked any more. The Forest Service has been in the process of regrading and decommissioning some trails in the area based on its 2011 Master Plan. The Wizard Trail can no longer be accessed from the Coyote Canyon side, which is mostly private land. Please obey all private property signs in the area.

Wizard Trail is a steep connector trail between Crybaby Trail (which goes above Coyote Wall) and Coyote Canyon Trail (which goes below the Wall). It may be not safe in icy/snowy weather but despite its steepness there's not much height exposure. It's upper steep portion is pretty short. Below the Coyote Wall, it goes NW along the base of the wall for a while before joining Coyote Canyon Trail. Its lower portion gets pretty rocky as the trail wanders among the trees and huge boulders below the scree field; and there are good views of the cliffs you just descended from (or about to ascend, depending on your direction of travel).

The unsigned upper junction is rather easy to find - if you're hiking up along the brink of Coyote Wall, look for a trail going left and downhill once you reach the upper edge of the meadows.

If you're hiking up below the Wall on Coyote Canyon Trail, the (also un-signed) lower junction of Wizard trail is difficult to find, but you need to look for a faint trail on your right once you pass bright-colored property signs, at about 2 miles up Coyote Canyon Trail.
