Pirate Cove Viewpoint

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Pirate Cove lathered in foam, Depoe Bay Headland (bobcat)

Description

From a 40-foot cliff on the Depoe Bay headland, you can look into Pirate Cove, a sandstone inlet protected by lava ‘gates’ on either side. An expanse of frothy foam often collects in the middle of the cove during times of high seas. Harbor seals will haul out on sandstone benches below the vast Whale Pointe Resort at Depoe Bay vacation apartment complex.

Pirate Cove is one of two subtidal research reserves in Oregon (The other is Gregory Point at Cape Arago). Since it is a study area, the public cannot collect shellfish or marine invertebrates from its waters or shoreline rocks.
