Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Our Lady shrine, Our Lady of Guadalupe Trappist Abbey (bobcat)

Description

On the summit ridge of Red Hill, the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe resides in a shaded spot that offers views to the Yamhill Valley.

The shrine honors the Virgin Mary, the title coming from her appearance four times before the Mexican peasant Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin in December 1531. Diego claimed that the vision spoke to him in Nahuatl, asking that a church be built on that site at the foot of Tepeyac Hill, then outside of Mexico City. The Virgin's appearance also left an impression of her outline on his cloak, which is now a sacred relic. Juan Diego's visions occurred at the site of a temple to the Aztec mother goddess Tonantzin, and there has been much discussion about the authenticity of the story and its connection to pre-Christian religion. Regardless, Juan Diego was later canonized, and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe became the most visited Catholic pilgrimage destination in the world, now receiving about 20 million visitors a year.
