Driving Directions
Drive I-5 north, and take Exit 21 for Highway 503E, Woodland, and Cougar.
Turn right after exiting, and proceed 0.8 miles to a roundabout.
Take the second exit right (Highway 503/Lewis River Road) and continue 22.2 miles.
At an intersection where Highway 503 makes a 90-degree turn right, keep straight on the 503 Spur for Cougar and Mt. St. Helens; keep driving another 11.8 miles through Cougar and past Yale Lake to pass over the Swift Number Two Forebay (the road becomes FR 90).
Then turn left on FR 83 for Ape Cave, Climbers Bivouac, and Lava Canyon, and drive 11.3 miles to the end of the road. Note that past the Ape Cave turnoff, FR 83, although paved, has some jolting dips and bumps.
