Big Bar

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Looking at Big Bar, on the Snake River (Born2BBrad)

Description

Big Bar is just south of Suicide Point. The Snake River National Recreation Trail passes above Big Bar, but there is a camping area, which may also be used by river rafters, at the south end of the bar. There is a seasonal pit toilet here. Big Bar was once a hay field but is now a regularly used backcountry airstrip. Across the river are the structures of the Temperance Creek Ranch, established by the Warnock brothers but now offering lodging by Hells Canyon Packers. Temperance Creek also has its own airstrip. Just south of Big Bar, the Snake River Trail swings in and out of Myers Creek, where you’ll notice the remains of a pipeline that once carried water to the fields at Big Bar.

Big Bar is one of those high river bars that consists of deposits from the Missoula Floods at the end of the last Ice Age, between 15,000 and 13,000 year ago. Although the floods swept down the course of the Columbia River, they also back flooded up its tributaries, such as the Snake.
