Barnes Butte

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Barnes Butte Reservoir and Grizzly Mountain from Barnes Butte (bobcat)

Description

Barnes Butte is part of the Crooked River Caldera, the remains of a vast supervolcano that last erupted 29 1/2 million years ago. From the summit, views extend in all directions. Past Grizzly Mountain, you may be able to make out Mount Jefferson and the Three Sisters in the Cascades. Round Mountain in the Ochocos is visible to the east. Below you spreads the Prineville Valley, with the Barnes Butte Reservoir closeby. To the southeast are Stearns Buttes, where the Crooked River turns directly south, and to the southwest are Grass Butte and the imposing hump of Powell Buttes.
