Zane Grey's Fishing Camp

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Zane Grey Camp sign at Fisher Creek, Mott Segment, North Umpqua Trail (bobcat)

Description

Zane Grey, who had previously fished and popularized the Rogue River, camped here in 1932 and returned every year for five years. The well-known author of Riders of the Purple Sage and other westerns vowed never to make the "secrets" of the North Umpqua public after seeing a tourist deluge on the Rogue because of his writings. In 1937, however, he suffered a stroke while at the fishing camp and became partially paralyzed and so never returned.

All that you can see today is a sign denoting the camp spot. Large Douglas-firs tower overhead and Fisher Creek flows into the North Umpqua here. There is poison oak-free river access under a shady canopy of alders.
