East Lostine to Eagle Cap Hike
Description
The Two Pan Trailhead has to be one of the largest trailheads I've seen. A large area for cars, another for horse trailers, and cars all along the road leading up to these two areas.
Yet, it was weird, not that many people. I think almost all people go for multiple days, so they're hiking up the trail, not milling around the trailhead like is more common at trailheads with lots of day hikers.
The trailhead is at the end of the Lostine River Road.
There are a number of campgrounds along the road, including Two Pan at the trailhead. At Two Pan is a large somewhat open area among sparse trees. I think it would be possible to find a place to camp out if you got there late in the day and wanted to camp until the next day, even if the campground was full.
Driving Directions
Drive I-84 east and take Exit 261 for Highway 82, La Grande and Elgin. After exiting, turn right for Highway 82, Elgin, and Wallowa Lake.
After 1.6 miles, go left at a traffic light on Highway 82/McAlister Road for Imbler, Elgin, and Enterprise.
Drive 17.9 miles to Elgin and turn right at a Stop sign for Wallowa, Lostine, and Enterprise.
Keeping on Highway 82, drive 34.7 miles into Lostine and turn right on the Lostine River Road.
Take the Lostine River Road 17.9 miles to its end. The first third is paved, two lane. The next third is gravel, two lane, watch for washboarding. The last third is dirt, one lane with pull-outs, watch for pot-holes, regular vehicles have to go slow.
On the way back, we stopped at La Grande for a meal, then drove 25 miles back towards Portland and stayed overnight one last night at Emmigrant Springs State Park - usually has vacancies, some freeway noise, showers,...
Fees and Regulations
Northwest Forest Pass is required to park at the trailhead.
There's a fee to camp at the campground there, and at the other campgrounds along the Lostine River Road.
