Manganese mines- Olympic National Park 9/16/06

Posted by chubby fm (2006-10-08)

There are several explorable mine shafts located on a steep wooded hillside just west of Lake Crescent on the NW edge of Olympic NP. If you want to visit the mines, bring some rope and a good flashlight.

Find the parking area west of Lake Crescent, just west of the turn off for Sol Duc Hot Springs, on the north side of the road, under the powerlines.
Parking Coordinates: N 48 04.664 W 123.57.579

You can hike up the road directly under the powerlines, and then continue on trail, or take the road west of the powerline that switchbacks up the hill. You may be able to drive this if you have good 4WD, its about a mile up with a good 800 foot elevation gain. The road suddenly peters out and is vegetated, but you can still hike the old roadbed up into the woods.
Road end waypoint: N 48 04.801 W 123 56.776

Head east into the woods to find the upper mine at N 48 04.772 W 123 56.676. You are very close when you traverse a steep scree slope using two horizontal ropes. Here you will get a nice view of Lake Crescent below you.

Here is the entrance to the upper mine from the outside and within

Just watch out for bats, rats and big creepy crickets.

There are multiple tunnels,so dont get lost! We found another mine entrance about 200 feet below this one at N 48 04.754 W 123 56.760 Getting down there was a bit tricky, it is very steep, but not technical climbing and there were some ropes available to help us slide down the scree. The lower mine shaft had multiple levels and many branches. Fun exploring!

Here I am standing in a large room in the second mine with access to a lower level- the big hole to the left. We didn't go down there, but it looked doable for the adventuresome.

We met some locals on our way out. They said there are two more mine entrances on the hillside.

Yikes, that is a big cricket.  Are they all over the place or just random?  Would it be a good idea to bring a helmet?  It sounds like this would be place to bring bread crumbs so you can find your way out.  Do you know if anything else besides managanese was mined there?

I found this interesting off wiki:

"Manganese is essential to iron and steel production by virtue of its sulfur-fixing, deoxidizing, and alloying properties. Steelmaking, including its ironmaking component, has accounted for most manganese demand, presently in the range of 85% to 90% of the total demand."
