Canyon Creek loop - Mr Jefferson Wilderness 8/20/2006

Posted by Paul (2006-08-21)

On Sunday we went up to the Mt Jefferson Wilderness and did the Canyon Creek loop trail.  The trail traverses in and out through burnt forest from the B&B Complex fire in 2003.  Its two miles to the lower meadow, 0.7 to the upper meadow, and another 0.5 miles to the lookout on a saddle on Three Fingered Jack.. The plan was to hike up to the lower meadow to set up some tarps and net shelters for a couple companies, then hike up to the upper meadow (to a cirque pond) at the base of Three Fingered Jack if we had time.

After setting up a couple shelters and talking with a nice woman, who was hiking with her dog (while her dog and Gaius played heartily), we ran out of time and had to skip the upper meadow and lookout. I told my better half about the loop and shes excited to go and do it. We plan on doing it next Saturday going all the way to the top.

Over Three Fingered Jack you could see the Cascade Crest Complex (was Puzzle Fire) plume over around Pamelia Lake.

Throughout the whole area is burnt, dead trees with new ground foliage popping up, especially concentrated around the creek you follow on the way out.

Wow, that plume was really getting high.  I've never hiked on that side of 3FJ before.  I like that meadow area.  I hit a lot of that burned area when I hiked south of 3FJ along the PCT.  It was the first time I'd hiked in a burn zone.

Looks like the area wasn't very busy?  How were the bugs?

Paul, nice report.  It looks like that area is starting to recover a bit.  I've only hiked in a burn zone one time, when I hiked the trails around and beyond Monon Lake near Olallie Lake a few years back.  It is definitely a different experience.  I almost felt like I was walking among ghosts.  All the burned trees and scarred ground left us with minimal cover.

I haven't been up there for years but I want to see that area again soon. That's a great overnight jaunt. It's a shame it got torched in the B&B fire. Lots of great areas got toasted in that one unfortunately. Thanks for the nice TR and pics.
