Fall Creek Falls is raging - May 19th

Posted by hduggan (2008-05-21)

My husband and I made our first trip to Fall Creek Falls on Sunday. We knew it was going to be pretty good right from the start, because the creek was swollen and rushing.

We hadn't really been tracking our mileage, so we were surprised that we had gotten to the falls so fast.

But we'd heard that we could get to the top of the falls, so we kept on going. We were a little puzzled about why we were hearing the rushing water in front of us when we'd left the falls behind. Then, we turned a corner and looked through the trees - oh, i see ... THAT Falls

We happened to hit the falls with a bunch of photographers who had been there before. None of them had seen it as active as it was that day. It was a perfect storm of big snowfall, cold spring, and a few hot days

(Part of a series of photos of my husband that I call Bob-dwarfed-by-nature :))

We hit a bunch of the Oregon waterfalls on the way home, thinking that they'd be at the same peak, but although they were bigger then they had been earlier in the season, none of that had the same uncontrolled power that we'd seen on the Washington side. Not sure if it's just the runoff from Adams or something else. Anyway, this is a great time to visit.

Any time that second segment appears on the lower tier of Falls Creek you know its running big.  Though short of the ocean being funneled into the drainage, Falls Creek doesn't exhibit the sort of extreme spring flow that a lot of the rivers in Washington and Oregon will show.  This is largely because a lot of Falls Creek is derived from the aquafir beneath Big Lava Bed and the Indian Heaven Volcanic field.  Lots of pourous rock in the area which allows the runoff to seep in and flow downhill more slowly than other streams.  Its one of the most consistent streams in the state.

Still looks like its about as big as I've ever seen it though.

That sounds interesting. I hope I can visit them someday.
