| At this page is mention of the 'Eagle Cutoff (including route to Wildcat Mountain)' and words to the effect this is an abandoned trail. Anyone know where this is located?

| I do not know of the specific trail, but Wildcat Mountain in the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness is directly above Eagle Creek. I suspect a way trail may have existed connecting the two,and ths may be the reference. Steve | Re: Eagle Cutoff (including route to Wildcat Mountain) Posted by Splintercat (2007-07-30)
| That's somewhat correct - the Eagle Cutoff still exists (and BTW, Pablo - I wrote that wish list of trail projects!), and can be found by hiking the Eagle Creek (Salmon-Huckleberry) to its end, then turning south (across the creek) and ascending the canyon wall to a junction with the Old Baldy Trail, just north of Squaw Mountain. I read a trip report of this section on Clackamas Trail Advocates a few weeks ago, and it sounds like it's open, and even somewhat maintained. I also ran into a young couple up on Wildcat Mountain last summer who had hiked it with backpacks. So it should be passable. I'm attaching a map snippet that shows the cutoff, plus surrounding landmarks. Take some photos if you go, Pablo! Tom |
