McNeil Point July 6

Posted by retired jerry (2007-07-10)

July 6 I did the McNeil Point Hike http://portlandhikersfieldguide.com/wiki/McNeil_Point_Hike.

There were a lot of other people doing this as a day hike - maybe 10 groups per day during the week and 20 on Saturday and Sunday.

I camped out for 3 nights and saw only one other camper.

About 2 miles from the trailhead you get a great view of Mount Hood.  This would be a good destination for a shorter hike:

At about 3 miles from the trailhead, is the sign showing where the McNeil Point Trail leaves the Timberline Trail.  As you can see, there's a bit of snow, but this is about as bad as it gets.  No steep snow slopes to slip on or large snow fields that make finding the trail difficult.  A lot of people were successfully negotiating this:

Above there, on the McNeil Point Trail, where it goes back over to McNeil Point are a couple other snow slopes.  There was like a trail worn in the snow so it was pretty easy to get through.  You can see a couple people:

Or up close it looks like:

One night, I camped at Cairn Basin.  The area is about half covered with snow.  I could find a couple dry campsites.

A bit before Cairn Basin, the Timberline Trail crosses a large stream that would be difficult to cross with the amount of snow melt right now, but there was still a place where snow covered the stream.  I think this snow bridge will melt in a week or so, when it will be more difficult to get across this stream.  See the three people crossing the stream:

One day I went up the McNeil Point to this saddle, which is at the top of the trail that is closed for revegetation, and then went off on this unmarked trail that immediately crosses the large stream.

In the valley above there I camped out one night.  There are a couple sites in the vicinity that are less busy than campsites below.

That day I continued up from there up this ridge that goes up to almost 7000'.  It's sort of a trail.  Not too many people.  It's easy to find - just go straight up from where the trail crosses the stream.

View from there - Rainier and Adams:

One weird thing I noticed were these Orange butterflies.  They cluster on the trail, and as you walk by, they produce a huge cloud - better keep your mouth closed.  Here they are, just before I disturb them.  There are about 50 there:

That looked like a great weekend trip.  I have seen lots of butterflys and I have read about butterflys in a lot of reports.   Seems to be a big year for butterflys.
