Wheatland Ferry Landing

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

The Wheatland Ferry in operation (bobcat)

Description

The Wheatland Ferry operation, dating to 1844, is the oldest such crossing in Oregon. The current ferry is the first that is self-powered (rather than relying on overhead cables) and can carry nine cars. All the ferries have been named after Daniel Matheny, the original ferry entrepreneur here. The present craft is the Daniel Matheny V.

This is one of three remaining ferry operations on the Willamette. The others are the Buena Vista and Canby ferries.

Wheatland was a Willamette Valley mill town that was obliterated by the great flood of December 1861.
