Driving Directions

From the south:

Drive I-5 north to Exit 11 for Battle Ground and Highway 502E.

Keep right after 0.2 miles (bearing left takes you to a Rest Area) and, in another 0.6 miles, merge right with Highway 502E for Battle Ground.

Drive 5.9 miles into Battle Ground, and turn left at a traffic light for Highway 503N, Amboy, and Yacolt.

Drive 12.6 miles to Amboy.

Bear right on 399th Street and drive 0.3 miles to a sharp turn in Amboy.

Go left here, and then after 0.2 miles, make another sharp turn right, keeping on 503N for Cougar and Chelatchie (This is also NE Chelatchie Road).

After 4.0 miles, turn right on NE Healy Road in Chelatchie, just after passing the Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument Headquarters.

Drive 5.2 miles (After 2.4 miles, the road becomes FR 54; once the road enters the forest the pavement is often broken and/or sunken - drive with care!), and come to a fork.

Keep right here and proceed another 1.6 miles to a junction at the unmarked (but with big yellow gate) road (actually, this is the second left fork possible after crossing the bridge), which climbs steeply, but is good (although coarse) gravel.

After 0.7 miles, stay left at a junction.

In another 0.5 miles, keep left again.

Drive 0.1 miles, and pass through a gate with signs that say “Discover Pass Required”.

Go 0.4 miles to stay right on what is now the S1000 road. At all intersections, stay straight ahead on the major road.

Continue 2.3 miles and reach the bridge over Siouxon Creek.

Keep going straight ahead, climbing and then dropping to the bridge over the North Fork Siouxon Creek.

About 0.9 miles past this bridge, look for the trailhead on the right, on a sharp left turn.

From the north:

Drive I-5 north and take Exit 21 for Highway 503E, Woodland, and Cougar. After exiting, turn right onto Highway 503E.

Drive 23.3 miles to the junction with Highway 503S and keep straight on the 503 Spur for Mt. St. Helens, Ape Cave, and Lava Canyon.

Keep driving for 8.4 miles, passing through Cougar and then past a power substation at the east end of Yale Lake.

Where the 503 Spur becomes FR 90, turn right onto a rough paved track and then turn right again.

Drive 0.3 miles over a bridge on the Lewis River and go left at a junction.

After 0.4 miles on gravel, go right onto Road S6000 (This is what it's marked as here, but it's S1000 on maps).

Keep on the main track as you wind up, driving 3.8 miles to the junction with Road S5000.

Keep left here and go another 1.0 miles to a four-way junction at a crest.

Keep straight and head downhill for 3.5 miles.

Where the road bends sharply to the right, there is an unsigned graveled, log-lined pullout on the left. This is the trailhead parking area.
