Take I-5 north from Portland. Take Exit 21 in Woodland. Turn right at the freeway ramp light and drive east on Highway 503. Continue straight on to Highway 503 Spur at the site of Jack's Restaurant (now destroyed by fire). Continue on Highway 503 Spur through the town of Cougar. 503 Spur changes to FS Road 90 somewhere in the area of Swift Creek Dam.

Turn left on FS Road 83, signed for Lava Canyon and Ape Cave. Stay on Road 83 for about nine miles to the lahar information sign. Turn right on to gravel Road 8322.
