Looking for new hikes, we followed Lorain's Afoot and Afield Portland and Vancouver trip to Roaring River and then up to Huxley Lake (2 short hikes). We started our hike at FR 4611 from Highway 224. The "road walk" from the field guide Huxley Lake description.

The road was passable in a SUV, but slow with very deep drainage canals across the road. The hike down to Roaring River (Grouse Point Trail?) was steep but in pretty good shape. The Roaring River was roaring and we didn't think about trying to cross it. We hiked up to/above Parrywinkle (per other posts) Falls and then back to FR 4611. From there, up to Huxley Lake and back. The trail was in great condition. The falls were the highlight.

Nice to see someone enjoying these primitive, little used trails. Roaring River is beautiful....
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming: WOW! What a ride! - Hunter S. Thompson

Ditto to that. How was the bushwhack up to the falls?

The bushwhack to the falls overlook was not difficult. We started out low along the river and did have to pass through some devil's club, but then came to a narrow section which required us to climb up. A short climb and there was a level area we could then walk along to the falls. Occasional down trees to cross over. I went down a moderately steep section to take some photos, but not all the way back to the river. Older OH posts show photos from the river level, but the flow looked pretty strong, so we stayed away.

Care to share any history? Did they live up there?
