Lower Deschutes Ticks

Post by Fishinandgold » April 6th, 2017, 8:56 am

Heading out this weekend and curious if anybody has been over that way and could give us a heads up on how bad the ticks are this year? Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen any ticks thus far this year. However, tick collecting is more of a factor where you walk. The only time I collected a tick on my dozen times on the Lower Deschutes was when we went through a brushy game trail and I collected 12 on/in my clothing. The other times, I stuck to wide trails and had nothing to show for my effort. I can't say there were less ticks on those days, just less opportunity.

I got a tick on Deschutes when I was sawing brush, so I made good contact with brush

If you walk on the old railroad bed, the brush is away from trail so little contact

Ticks are horrendous in the Wallowas and surrounding area so far this year. My friend and I did a 7 mile hike yesterday and each of us picked off at least a dozen ticks of each other while on the trail, and then my friend found 7 more on her body when she took a shower later that evening.

Probably heading out that way tomorrow and can report back.

I did pickup a tick at coldwater lake near MSH last Friday. That really surprised me a lot.

On all my hikes I never picked ticks at Descutes or other desert hikes. OTOH, if you're closer west in areas with oak/grass mix, they will be much easier to find. I picked ticks at Catherine Creek and Coyote Wall every time, quite a few at Lyle Cherry Orchard, even as far west as Aldrich Butte (where there's small oak stand on S side of the summit - yes, nice spot to sit and have a picnic).

Just got back from Deschutes River hike overnight. Walked through brush & grass with no ticks seen, on me or my hiking partner. Froze overnight.
