Trail Run Alder Springs to Deschutes 4/29/17

Post by BekahB » May 1st, 2017, 9:31 am

Sunday the 29th of April, 2017 my husband and I took a run on the Alder Springs trail, down to Whycus Creek and finally the Deschutes.

The road in was rocky, but nothing unsurpassable. Lots of visitors arriving when we did at 10am.

Alder Springs is a lovely cool temperature and was easy to cross, as the Sisters melt off has not yet happened.

Once across and following the Whycus, we found quite a few animal carcass. There was a dear carcass off trail, which appears to be from a hunter. Another dear carcass is on the trail, again, not an animals doing. There were also a few squirrels which look to have been an owls catch and release on the trail.

And there are two more on the trailhead side of the creek, all apparent hunter kills. Info board at Whychus crossing campground says more mule deer were killed by poachers last year than were killed by legal hunting.

Apparently NOT hunter kills. The article references the dead deer on the Alder Springs trail...

Thanks for linking that. Disturbing and sad, but also fascinating and important to read.
