How-to video: Timberline, PCT, Jackpot Meadows, Salmon River

This video documents how to do a loop hike starting from Timberline Lodge down the PCT to Jackpot Meadows, from there down the Salmon River Trail and walking out to Welches. This hike was done using 100% public transit from Portland: Max to Gresham, Sandy bus to Sandy Transit Center, and the Mt Hood Express up to Timberline. On the way back I picked up the Mt Hood Express at Welches. This is a real bargain: $2.50 for Max, $1 for SAM, and $2 for Mt Hood Express for a whopping sum of $5.50. Figure 2.5-3 hours on transit depending on where in Portland you start.

This hike has a little bit of everything: Hood views at the start, PCT through-hikers (you are hiking against the flow), meadows along Jackpot, and then miles of the beautiful Salmon River and its gorge.

I would have liked to do the Green Canyon/Hunchback which would have added another 7 miles and extended the hike into a 4th day, but the junction is not marked on the Old Salmon Trail so I missed it and just decided to hike out. Next time!!

Very cool that you were able to use public transportation coming and going. Great idea for those who want to do a one-way backpack or who don't have a car!

We have added taking public transportation to Timberline as a goal in the near future especially since we live a block from lightrail. Thanks for the video!
The mountains are calling and I must go.

I hope to turn out a video in the next few days about to get to/from Mt Hood and Portland. Should be useful for PCT hikers looking to to take a break, and PDX dwellers who don't want to or can't drive up there and leave their care.

I think I have all the footage I need, just need to take the time to edit it.

Just finished posting the video on using public transit between PDX and Timberline. Posted it on another thread here:viewtopic.php?f=7&t=22572.
