Munra Point 7/11/15 Dry but cloudy Summer day

Post by Granola22 » July 13th, 2015, 3:11 pm

The trail starts easy and flat! So deceiving

Elowah falls .8 miles in [says the sign]

You can see one of your future view points up there. On the lower left cliff where people are standing.

the bridge going across Moffett creek

The unmaintained trail still seems in great shape! Just STEEP.

Image
Slippery steep

Image
The 4x4in starts early in this one! We decided against trekking poles for this hike since we knew we'd be using our hands a lot anyways..

And then the real scrambles start

The chimney is a lot longer than the picture looks. I'd really suggest going one at a time up or down this as falling rocks on the face don't feel too good !!

Made it!

It looks pretty dead up here, but I'm feelin pretty alive!

Image
Out to one of the slopes. Looks like the trail keeps going a LOT farther off into the distant peaks!?

Heading back to the center

And out to the other point

I wouldn't suggest this hike on a windy day..

Here's the end. Lovely view with Bonneville dam below

Heading back

Lovely little ledge to walk on. Death is on either side

Here's a better perspective on things

Ready to head back down! You really can't walk on your heels on the slopes. The embedded rocks are really great footing. A great tip, act as if you're digging your toes into the ground. Every step. If that doesn't make sense, then don't do this hike!

Glad that you enjoyed your trip but I have a question about this photo:
Image
A couple of moths ago some folks went in there & fixed up the switchback trail and tried to block off these direct climb routes so that the erosion might be reduced. I believe a sign was also posted explaining that. Is the sign still there by the way?

Just wondering why you elected to go up those direct badly eroded slopes rather than stick to the switchback trail?

Cheers.

Guy, I think they did stay on the trail. The sign is still there and the spot pictured in your post is one of the first switchback turns. This is on-trail, but still eroded as aitch-eee-double-hockey-sticks. Needs those rebar-stabilized "steps" you see on some trails or some sort of traction/retaining tread. I was up there recently and encountered this. Granola22's "four wheel drive" solution is the best for now. Other people have started skirting this zone and making this mess wider.

Aside from all that the trail does look much better as one switchback option rather than the two- or- three braided trails that used to be open, so thank you to the person(s) who blocked off those damaged options.

We definitely stayed on trail. Right smack in the middle of it. That part was the worst switch back. One of the very first few of the unmaintained trail. Thankful for the embedded rocks to help keep our footing back down!

You two seem very comfortable with the exposure! :D
Some people are really fit at eighty; thankfully I still have many years to get into shape…

ha, one of us is! Adam isn't so happy with ledges with no railing. He said he was really pretty nervous once we hit the top, but he conquered his fear. Maybe because I made it look so easy? ;)

I'm really interested in hiking Mt. Huashan in China but he won't go on that one with me :[

I just did Munra yesterday for my first time... man, it's a fun scramble up but very difficult on the way down! Did you do anything to make it more manageable? And thanks for sharing :)
