For topos - http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/state/all
OpenStreetMap - http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
I use both because topos are old and outdated but useful and OSM I've personally done a bunch of work to make sure a lot of Oregon and some of Washington trails are correct. But really I just use my smartphone in the field.

If you're looking for some really high-quality base maps for GPS, I really recommend Gaia GPS. It's always been a headache getting quality maps for a Garmin, and the way they (don't) handle third-party software it doesn't make it any easier. Gaia on the smart phone is really in the way of the future, check it out if you have not yet done so.

Re: garmin maps
For Garmin maps, these links are all you need. I load both NW Topos AND a routable OSM mapset into my Garmin, and it's a pretty nice combo.aiwetir wrote:For topos - http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/state/all

Some great stuff there at the gpsfiledepot. I downloaded a fantastic trails and topo map for the entire UK that I load up when I make trips back to the homeland!adamschneider wrote:For Garmin maps, these links are all you need. Re: garmin maps
one thing about switchbacks.com, is they have pretty good locations for trails in Washington and adjacent areas.
based on GPS tracks that people took, not from USGS topo maps that are close but not very up to date
I think I'll do gpsfiledepot for California where I often go and is outside the switchbacks area

Re: garmin maps
If you want actual trail positions, be sure to get OSM data. I have a few of the "______ Topo" mapsets (Arizona Topo, California Topo, Hawaii Topo, etc.) from GPSFileDepot, and they're mostly based off of the old USGS data -- so the contour lines are accurate, but the trails are not.retired jerry wrote:I think I'll do gpsfiledepot for California where I often go and is outside the switchbacks area
(Of course, even the OSM data isn't guaranteed to be perfect, but at least there's a CHANCE that someone like "aiwetir" has been cleaning it up.)
