Activist president renames iconic American mountain

Post by Bosterson » August 31st, 2015, 10:22 am

:D

Who actually calls it McKinley??
President Obama announced on Sunday that Mount McKinley was being renamed Denali, using his executive power to restore an Alaska Native name with deep cultural significance to the tallest mountain in North America.

And this one:

Why would an Ohioan's opinion about a peak in Alaska matter?

How about Alaskans name features in Alaska and if Ohioans want a Mt. McKinley they can rename Cambell Hill or Mt. Rumpke.

The most made up controversy of all. Even Sarah Palin is in favor of it...
I think she can see it from her porch...

My first thought when I saw the headlines was, "well, that'll piss off some Republicans"... and then I learned that the entire state of Alaska has been trying to get it changed for decades.

this is a good precedence Obama set because if there was ever a mountain whos names needs to be changed to its original its Mt Hood. Not only was "lord" Samuel Hood not an American he was actually an enemy of the United States.

Agree that isn't a very appealing namesake! But I think what a lot of folks are missing here is that all Obama did was authorize Federal action in accord with local desire. Alaska itself declared the name change in 1980, and the locals there have used Denali for hundreds of years before that.

well then we have a very long road ahead if we want to see Hood officially called Wy'east because everybody here calls it Hood. At least I've never heard of any movement to change it
