Driving Directions

Via Hood River:

Drive I-84 east to Exit 64 for Highway 35, White Salmon, and Government Camp.

Make a right after exiting and then another right and drive 0.3 miles to a four-way intersection. Keep straight here on Highway 35 for Odell, Parkdale and Mt. Hood.

Drive 23.1 miles to a pullout on the left for the Zigzag Trailhead. This is just before Highway 35 recrosses the East Fork of the Hood River.

The Zigzag Trailhead can be used as one end of a car shuttle or hike/bike to do the Dog River Trail Hike. Park a car or leave a bicycle at the Zigzag Trailhead and then begin your hike from the Dog River Trailhead. Where the Dog River Trail Hike meets the Surveyors Ridge Trail, go right and drop 1.8 miles to the Zigzag Trailhead. Drive or cycle back to the Dog River Trailhead 4.4 miles (mostly downhill) on Highway 35 to complete the loop.

The Zigzag Trail used to begin at the Polallie Campground and crossed the East Fork of the Hood River on a footbridge. That bridge was destroyed and the continued instability of the river necessitated moving the trailhead to the south so a river crossing is not necessary.
