Description
Sturgeon Rock is a large basaltic monolith just to the west of Silver Star Mountain. It gets its name from its fin-like appearance when seen from Silver Star. Sturgeon Rock is traditionally known as the high point of Clark County. The rock actually crosses the county border into Skamania County at the point where a cairn sits. USGS topographical maps have Sturgeon Rock located incorrectly. Please see the discrepancy by looking at the maps below. Local hikers, including Oregon Hikers' own Don Nelsen, fought to have the USGS recognize the mistake and modify the labeling on future maps, but the error lives on.
One can summit Sturgeon Rock. You can access it by taking the Sturgeon Rock Trail off the traditional south route up Silver Star using the Grouse Vista Trail (the Grouse Vista Trail does not pass the rock directly). Follow the Sturgeon Rock Trail down until you reached the back (west) end of the rock, and then scramble up. Another way to summit is by making a loop using the Tarbell Trail (see the Silver Star Mountain via Sturgeon Rock Loop Hike). You'll be treated to some great views of Pyramid Rock, Silver Star Mountain, Mount Rainier, Mount Saint Helens and Mount Hood.
