Sturgeon Rock is a large basaltic monolith just to the West of Silver Star Mountain.  It gets its name from it's fin-like appearance when seen from Silver Star.  Sturgeon Rock is traditionally known as the high point of Clark County.  The rock actually crosses the county border into Skamania County at the point where a cairn sits.  The USGS has the location of Sturgeon Rock incorrect.  Please see the descrepency by clicking on one of the map links above.  Local hikers including Don Nelsen fought to have the USGS recognize the mistake and modify the labelling on future maps.  As of Summer of 2006 they have agreed to do so.

Description

One can summit Sturgeon Rock. You can access it by taking the Sturgeon Stairway trail off the tradional south route up Silver Star called the Grouse Vista trail. Follow Sturgeon Stairway until you reached the back end (West-most) of the rock, then scramble up. You'll be treated to some great views of Pyramid Rock, Silver Star Mountain, Mount Rainier, Mount Saint Helens and Mount Hood
