Fees and Regulations
- Self-issued wilderness permit
- Northwest Forest Pass (or America the Beautiful Pass) required
- Central Cascades Wilderness Permit required: $6 overnight permit; $1 per person day use (June 15th - October 15th)
Driving Directions
There are two ways to approach this trailhead. One can either come from Highway 242 from the Clackamas River area or from the Detroit area.
From the Clackamas: Take 224 past Estacada and continue straight on FR 46 at the Ripplebrook Ranger Station. Follow 46 past the signs for Ollalie Lake. A few miles past the "summit" (there is a hairpin turn and views of Jefferson), turn left on FR 4685. If you pass the Breitenbush Guard Station, you have gone too far. Road 4685 will soon cross a bridge over the North Fork Breitenbush River. From here on the road is potholed and fairly rough. It should be doable in a passenger car if taken slowly. About 6 miles from FR 46, turn right into the large parking area for the South Breitenbush Trail and the Crag Trail. If FR 4685 reaches a hairpin turn, you've gone too far.
From Highway 22: Take 22 east of Salem to the town of Detroit and turn left on FR 46 with signs to Breitenbush. Follow Road 46 about 10 miles, and turn right on 4685 about a mile past Breitenbush Guard Station. Follow FR 4685 for about 6 miles to the trailhead on the right.
It is about the same driving time depending on where in Portland you come from.
Other Notes
FR 4685 is a very potholed road. Drive carefully!
