Shelter Falls

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Looking down Shelter Falls to the swimming hole on the Middle Santiam River (bobcat)

Description

Shelter Falls is a small, narrow waterfall that plunges through a defile on the Middle Santiam River. It is near the Shedd Camp Shelter. Below the falls is one of the best swimming holes in the Cascades, a mecca for locals on summer weekends. There is no footbridge over the Middle Santiam, so the most direct crossing is to hop over the falls. If you're nervous about doing this, hike upstream to where the river is spread out out and shallow and make a ford.
