Description
Rock Creek Butte is the highest peak in the Elkhorn Range and also the highest point in Oregon's Blue Mountains. As per Summit Post, it is the 26th highest summit in Oregon. It is also a peak of high prominence: #5 in Oregon after Mount Hood, Sacajawea Peak, Mount Jefferson, and South Sister.
The actual summit is about 1,000 feet and half a mile above the Elkhorn Crest Trail and is an easy, though steep, cross-country hike from there. From the 9,106-foot summit, you'll see Rock Creek Lake directly below. More expansive vistas extend across the broad, agricultural North Powder valley to the north and east and the Sumpter Valley to the south. The mountain range to east is the Wallowas, while far to the west the Strawberry Mountains are prominent.
