Driving Directions
Drive I-84 east to Exit 64 for Highway 35, White Salmon, and Government Camp. After exiting, turn right and drive 0.3 miles to a four-way intersection.
Keep straight here for Odell, Parkdale, and Mt. Hood. Drive 5.2 miles and make a right onto Ehrck Hill Drive.
Go 1.2 miles on this road and make a right, still on Ehrck Hill Drive.
In 0.5 miles, reach a four-way intersection; keep straight here to cross Highway 282 and continue for 2.0 miles, now on Summit Drive.
At the intersection with Highway 281, go left for Parkdale and Lost Lake. Drive 4.2 miles and then bear right for Dee and Lost Lake.
Go 0.3 miles, crossing the Middle Fork Hood River, and reach a T-junction.
Go right here on Punchbowl Road for Rainy Lake. Drive 1.3 miles on Punchbowl Road (Do not turn left on Green Road), cross the West Fork Hood River, and reach a junction.
Turn right here on Dead Point Road (FR 2820, formerly known as Wahtum Lake Road). In 0.2 miles, the road becomes gravel; keep left for Rainy Lake.
Head up FR 2820 for 6.8 miles, keeping to the main track; the road is rubbly and potholed in some places.
Keep left at a junction and go 1.0 miles farther to a T-junction.
Here, turn left and drive 3.3 miles to make a right turn onto the narrow spur leading to the parking area for the Rainy Lake Campground.
Note: Two trails begin at this trailhead. The Rainy-Wahtum Trail #409 (but mislabeled 490) heads up an old road bed to the right of the outhouse. The Rainy Lake Trail #423A goes through the campground to pass Rainy Lake and join the North Lake Trail #423.
