Driving Directions

From Portland, drive south on I-5 for 38 miles. Drive east on Highway 22 for 80 miles. Drive east on Highway 20 for 26 miles to the city of Sisters. Drive West on Highway 242 for about 1.5 miles. Drive South on the Pole Creek road for 11 miles - the first part is paved, then gravel that is wide enough for two cars to pass but is very washboarded. Total 156 miles.

You could also go here (or back) on Highway 242 over McKenzie Pass. It's about 12 miles from the Pole Creek road to McKenzie Pass. It's about 10 miles longer back to Portland, but the road is windier so it takes a bit longer than that. McKenzie Pass is very scenic so this is a good option. Check out Dee Wright Observatory at the pass. See Lava Lake Trailhead.

Fees and Regulations

  • Northwest Forest Pass required
