Driving Directions
The Salmon River Trail once began near the community of Welches, but when a road was built up the canyon to begin logging operations in the 1960s, the trail was truncated. Sections of the lower trail still parallel the road, and are described in the Old Salmon River Hike. This is the trailhead is for that old portion of trail. There are no toilets or water provided at this trailhead. Because the Salmon River Road parallels the Old Salmon River Trail for its entire length, there are actually five separate, signed access points with parking that, combined, serve as the trailhead for the Old Salmon River Trail. The string of trailheads are described in the narrative for the Old Salmon River Hike, and denoted as trailheads A through E on the map below, and in photos on this page. These are not official Forest Service designations, however, and are only intended to help you navigate a somewhat confusing series of trail access points.
The trailhead can be reached from Highway 26 by driving one mile past the Welches shopping center to Salmon River Road, on the right. Follow Salmon River Road for several miles until you pass a large sign listing mileages to various trailheads, then the gateway sign to the Mount Hood National Forest. The first of the Old Salmon River Trailhead parking areas is located one-tenth mile beyond the gateway sign, on the right. The additional B through E alternative parking areas are occur at one-third to half-mile intervals for the next couple of miles, and are signed with trailhead markers.
