Driving Directions
To get to the North Burnt Lake Trailhead, go to the community of Zigzag on U.S. 26 18 miles East of Sandy and 10 miles West of Government Camp. Go North on the Lolo Pass Road (forest service road 18) for 4 miles (two lanes paved). Turn right on Rd 1825 labeled "campgrounds trailheads" (two lanes paved). After 0.6 miles, stay right on the bridge going over the Sandy River. There is a gate here that is closed in the winter when there's snow, maybe a few months starting in December. In November of 2006 the road was washed out on the far side of this bridge and hopefully it will be fixed in the spring of 2007. Go past McNeil Campground at mile 0.8. Go past the road to the right that goes to Riley Horse Camp. Turn right on the road to Lost Creek Campground (2.2 miles from Lolo Pass Road). Take this road (gravel), past Lost Creek Campground, 1.6 miles from road 1825, to the trailhead.
The trailhead is a dead end of the road which is just barely big enough to turn around. In June of 2006 there was a porta potty and a trash can.
