Go north on the Lolo Pass Road (Forest Service Road 18) for 4 miles (two lanes paved). Turn right on Rd 1828 labeled "campgrounds trailheads" (two lanes paved). At mile 0.6 from Lolo Pass Road, turn right on road 1825 onto the bridge going over the Sandy River. There is a gate here that is closed in the winter when there's snow, maybe a few months starting in December. The bridge over the Sandy was washed out November 2006 but has finally been fixed (October 2007). This is a temporary fix and they are planning a permanent fix in 2008 (which will probably deny access for a period). Go past McNeil Campground at mile 0.8 (from Lolo Pass Road). Go past the road to the right that goes to Riley Horse Camp. At mile 2.2, stay straight on 1825, past the left turn to the Ramona Falls Trailhead (1825-100), on the road to Lost Creek Campground. Take the road (gravel), past Lost Creek Campground. At mile 2.7 is an unmarked fork, stay right. At mile 3.8 is the trailhead. There are no signs for the Burnt Lake Trailhead except right at the trailhead.
The trailhead is a dead end of the road which is just barely big enough to turn around. In June of 2006 there was a porta potty and a trash can.
