Mt. Margaret from Mt. Teragram, Mt. Margaret Backcountry (bobcat)
  • Hikes including this location:

Description

Mount Margaret, just off the Boundary Trail, is the eponymous major peak of the Mount Margaret Backcountry in the Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Campsites in the backcountry are in a few designated spots, including one near Mount Margaret, and need to be reserved far in advance. The great landslide of the May 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens displaced the contents of Spirit Lake below and caused a 750-foot tidal wave to wash up the north slope of Mt. Margaret.

On a clear day, there are views up and down the Cascades from Mount Baker to Mount Jefferson. Looking north, there is knobby Mount Teragram, with Mount Whittier and Mount Venus at the head of the Coldwater Creek valley. The Goat Mountain ridge stretches behind. To the west are Minnie Peak, Coldwater Peak, The Dome, and Saint Helens Lake. You'll get a full frontal view of the breach on Mount Saint Helens across Spirit Lake and the Pumice Plain. To the east are Mount Adams and Goat Rocks, with the Strawberry Mountain ridge closer across the Green River valley.
