Description

The trailhead is at the Deschutes State Recreation Area.

There is a state park with camping - $5 per night for tents and $12 per night for trailers.

Driving Directions

From Portland, drive to The Dalles on I-84, then continue east on I-84.

About 14 miles from The Dalles, follow the signs to "Deschutes State Park" or "Deschutes Recreation Area". Follow the signs into the Deschutes State Park Campground about 17 miles east of The Dalles.

There is a parking area at the south end of the park next to the T camping loop below the camp host, and another parking area just before this below the full time park caretaker. Either of these are a bit more secure.

If you park right next to the highway, your car is a little less secure. The ranger said there was a car break-in there recently.

From the end of the road, hike up to the main trail about 100 feet above you, or you could walk along the river on the hiker only trail (and get ticks on you).

There's camping in the campground which will probably be full summer weekends.

Fees and Regulations

$5 per night for backpacking.
