Helping Out

The Portland Hikers Wiki is a work of many people and it's a labor of love. It's become a great resource for hikers throughout the region. It would not be possible without a lot of help from a lot of people, so we're always looking for more people to help out. There are many hikes yet to be covered and many more can be improved with more information. A higher quantity of information will only enhance the site.

On the other hand, if quantity is one leg of success, quality and organization are the other two. The information needs to be accurate and presented to standard ways to best communicate to the wiki readers. To that end, we've done everything we can to ensure a standardized system. We've developed a schema and templates that must be followed for all pages. The Portland Hikers Wiki welcomes your help, but we require that you get to know how things work before you contribute. This means checking out the wiki, learning the basics of MediaWiki and also learning the schema and guidelines that are specific to this wiki.

For general guidance in editing a wiki, the Wikipedia help pages, or the Wikipedia Tutorial are great places to start. Look at those and then practice editing at the Sandbox.

For articles specifically geared toward Portland Hikers, take a close look at the Help and Guideline pages. These are required reading for anyone who wants to help out with the wiki.
