Description
Hamilton Mountain is a popular destination on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge. Its characteristic stair step profile, and its position behind Beacon Rock make it among the most recognizable features in the area.
Hamilton is probably the best example of the shearing action of the violent Missoula Floods that shaped this whole region near the end of the last ice age. Hikers will get close up views of the massive columnar basaltic columns left exposed as the rest of the mountain broke apart.
From the summit of Hamilton you get fantastic views of Table Mountain, Bonneville Dam, and Mount Adams to your east. If you travel north a few hundred feet to a saddle, the views open up to your west and down to the Columbia River due south, and on a clear day you will see Mount Hood poking its head over Tanner Butte across the river.
