Driving Directions
The Grouse Vista Trailhead is the most common starting point for those climbing Silver Star Mountain from the South. It has a few informatal names like 'Silver Star South Trailhead', or 'Tarbell Trail South Trailhead'. The forest road up to this location is in need of maintenance. Four wheel drive is not required, but a high clearance vehicle may be advised - although this writer has driven to the trailhead in a family sedan on several occasions. In 2006 the Gifford Pinchot Forest Service added a trailhead sign, but for first-time visitors which of two trails to take up to Silver Star Mountain. The trail you want is the one on the opposite side of the road from the sign.
Driving Directions
These directions have been verified on several visits to this trailhead. The directions are wordy, but it's not as bad as it looks. A few of the roads change names several times, making this more wordy than it needs to be. Travel time from downtown Portland is about an hour and a half.
Take I5 or I205 to Route 14 in Washington. Take Route 14 East to Washougal.
Reset your trip odometer. Turn left on 15th Street in Washougal (across from Steamboat Landing Park) and drive .6 mile through town (the name of the road changes to 17th street.)
.6 Continue straight over the Washougal river bridge as 17th Street changes names to Washougal River Road. Travel 6.1 miles on Washougal River Road as it winds along side the Washougal River
6.7 Turn left on Hughes Road (marked Bear Prarie Road on the local road sign). Travel 2.4 miles as the road winds uphill and through rural forests and farm land
8.3 Hughes Road turns into NE 392 AVE although you man not notice is as the road curves back and forth. Continue straight another .3 miles
8.6 Again, you are really staying on the same road, but NE 392 AVE turns right sharply and changes names to NE 28th Street / NE Miller Road. Follow this for 1.2 miles
9.8 Turn right on Sky Road / NE 39th Street. Go about .1 miles
9.9 Turn left on NE412 Ave / Skamania Mines Road. Drive about .2 miles to a Y in the road
10.1 Continue on Skamania Mines Road, bearing right at the Y in the road. Travel another 1.2 miles.
11.3 Continue on Skamania Mines Road, which crosses the West Branch of the Washougal River then becomes a dirt road. Continue about 1.3 miles as the road narrows and gains elevation steeply as it winds through the thick forest.
12.6 You will come to a stop sign. There is no road sign here. Turn left on Forest Road 1200 / Skamania Mines Road and continue about .1 mile to a fork in the road.
12.7 Bear left, continuing on Forest Road 1200. There is a local road sign here, but it was in pretty rough shape last time I saw it. Drive 5.8 miles as the rough road continue to wind through thick forests an occasional clear cuts
18.5 Arrive at the trailhead.
