Looking down on Fishing Rock from the viewpoint (bobcat)

Description

Fishing Rock is a lava island, separated from a peninsula by a churning chasm. From the viewpoint, look for basking seals, sunning cormorants, and prospecting oystercatchers. The rounded boulders that compose the point and the rock are pillow basalts, formed when a lava flow, in this case the Grand Ronde member of the Columbia River Basalts, hits water.

Fishing Rock itself is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and Oregon Islands Wilderness. In the past, fishermen used to bring ladders or planks to bridge the chasm and fish off the rock ledge on the island.
