Description
The Brune Homestead remains lie surrounded by a grove of walnut trees; there is also an osage orange tree here and a pear tree that blossoms profusely in the spring. A line of poplars just to the west serves as a windbreak. A pair of red-tailed hawks were nesting here in 2015.
Up the hill from the walnut grove is a small spring sheltered by a springhouse.
Bill Brune and his wife, Louisa Brown Brune, were German immigrants who settled here in 1892 or a little before. Along with other members of his family, also homesteaders in the area, Bill Brune ran sheep and took advantage of the Timber Culture Act to increase his acreage.
