Driving Directions

From Portland take Interstate 5 North into Washington to exit 9 and and follow Route 502 as it zigzags towards Battleground and intersects Route 503. Take right and head North on Route 503 for about 5 1/2 miles. Turn right on 319 St and go about 8 miles. The road changes names swings back Southward then Eastward again before becoming Lucia Falls road. Follow it comes along side the East Fork Lewis River. Watch for Sunset Falls Road just after the Moulton Falls park sign. Turn right on Sunset Falls road (map) and follow it for seven miles until you reach Sunset Falls Campground (map)

From the campground you'll turn right as the paved road relents to gravel. You'll immediately cross the one-lane bridge over the Lewis River, swing left and head uphill quickly as you enter the forest on Road 41. You'll follow Road 41 about 9.5 miles to a open clearing with views all around. The trailhead is not marked and is at the southern end of the large parking area.

More info

Road 41 is a gravel forest road. It is accessible by normal (non-4x4) passenger vehicles, but take it slow. It is wise to carry a shovel and saw whenever entering forest roads in case of blow downs or slides. Road 41 is not plowed and receives varying amounts of snow during winter months. Access current conditions before planning a hike.

Fees / Regulations

Gifford Pinchot National Forest prohibits the removal of forest products along Road 41 and the Bluff Mountain Trail.
