Driving Directions
From Bandon:
From the center of Bandon (the junction of Highway 101 and 2nd Street), drive south for 23.7 miles, and then turn left onto Elk River Road for the fish hatchery (This is 1.2 miles past the turnoff for Cape Blanco State Park).
Drive 10.9 miles along this narrow paved road with some rough spots (After 7.7 miles it becomes FR 5325), and keep left at the junction with FR 5202.
Continue 8.4 miles, passing the Sunshine Bar Campground, and turn left onto FR 5201.
Pass the Butler Bar Campground, and proceed 8.7 miles on this narrow isolated gravel road. The trailhead, on a short spur off to the right, is clearly marked with a hiker signpost.
From Port Orford:
From the center of Port Orford (the junction of Highway 101 and 9th Street), drive north for 3.1 miles, and then turn right onto Elk River Road for the fish hatchery (This is 1.2 miles past the turnoff for Cape Blanco State Park).
Drive 10.9 miles along this narrow paved road with some rough spots (After 7.7 miles it becomes FR 5325), and keep left at the junction with FR 5202.
Continue 8.4 miles, passing the Sunshine Bar Campground, and turn left onto FR 5201.
Pass the Butler Bar Campground, and proceed 8.7 miles on this narrow isolated gravel road. The trailhead, on a short spur off to the right, is clearly marked with a hiker signpost.
Notes
- FR 5201 is a remote forest road. There may be rocks on the route in places and also tall grass growing up in the middle of the track. At one point, a short paved section takes you around a cliff face where the road has been blasted out. It's best to do this drive in the dry summer season after winter/spring rockfall has been cleared up.
