Aspen Butte

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Revision as of 23:52, 23 November 2020 by Bobcat (Talk | contribs)

The summit block of Aspen Butte from the Mountain Lakes Loop Trail, Mountain Lakes Wilderness (bobcat)

Description

Aspen Butte is the highest of the four summits that make up the shield volcano complex of the Mountain Lakes Wilderness. It can be reached via a one-mile user path up its north ridge from the Mountain Lakes Loop Trail. The east slope of Aspen Butte descends steeply but gradually to the shore of Aspen Lake, while the north face is rugged and vertical, plunging to three glacial cirques at the head of the South Pass Creek drainage. The other Mountain Lakes volcanoes are in view: Mount Carmine is directly to the north with Mount Harriman behind it; Greylock Mountain is to the west. Vast Upper Klamath Lake spreads to the east. Mount McLoughlin is obvious to the west and Mount Shasta's snowy summit can be seen to the southwest.
