Gnarl Ridge and other fires

Post by Grannyhiker » September 18th, 2008, 12:17 am

The Gnarl Ridge fire is actively burning again, and several other fires are burning too, thanks to the recent dry weather.

I posted the above link under the "Red Flag Warning--Gnarl Ridge" trip report thread http://www.portlandhikers.org/forum/vie ... ?f=8&t=887, but decided to post it here also for added emphasis.

Let's hope that the rain forecast for early next week will knock these fires down again and clear our atmosphere so the moon and sun will be their normal colors. Of course, if it's raining, we won't see either of those celestial bodies! More important, though, are the buildings (Tilly Jane cabins and historic Cloud Cap Inn) and the residences in the Cooper Spur Ski Area that are threatened.

The closures are far more extensive than last time and include all Timberline Trail access from Hood River County including Vista Ridge, Pinnacle Ridge, Elk Cove and Eden Park. Interestingly newton Creek isn't listed though it's almost next to the closed trails to Elk Meadows. Maybe they just missed that one. Someone might want to copy this thread to the general info category where it might get read more? Especially with all the extra closures. That info was updated on the 19th on the forest service website .

Gene, the trail closure info is in the General Information forum http://www.portlandhikers.org/forum/vie ... ?f=7&t=906. It has been posted on both the second and third pages of this thread. I just hope that Mt. Hood is getting some of the pouring rain that went through Troutdale about an hour ago. That would help a lot!
