Trinity Alps 5/27/2021

Post by retired jerry » June 5th, 2021, 1:44 pm

I just got back from Trinity Alps in Northern California

Basically, I did https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guid ... _Lake_Hike

Perfect time to go there. The snow is pretty much all melted off any trail you'd want to walk on. It got up to 85F or so - pretty warm.

The only snow on the Granite Lake Pass was right at the top. I walked around it to the right.

There was still a lot of snow at Deer Lake and pass above that. I talked to some people that went over it but I was too lazy this time.

Going up from Deer Creek to Black Basin was the only time I had any snow to walk over, but it was easy spring snow.

Going over Mumford Pass there was a snow bank, but the trail went around it on the right

Going back home there were already a couple forest fires but the smoke wasn't where I was. This could be a bad season. Hopefully no late summer windstorms this year.

Early season alpine! Sounds like a great trip. Also early season wildfires in California. Yikes!

85 degrees at altitude in early June does not bode well for the snow pack.

yeah

that snow at Deer Lake won't be around much longer

this is a perfect time to go visit, before it gets too hot, and before the snow melts off in the mountains here

and sometimes the weather is better there. I didn't set up my tent once but it was raining in Portland. A little.
