Twin Lakes Snowshoe 4/4

Oh, boy, have I found a great place to explore! Twin Lakes are two gorgeous little pools that hold the image of Mt. Hood in their hands on a clear day. Hugged by old growth forest and nestled among a scattering of small buttes, the wind can't find them but we sure will!

They are further from 26 than Mirror Lake, so they are less crowded. The terrain is a bit tougher than Trillium Lake, so you won't have to worry about dodging wobbly novice cross-country skiers on the trail. The Frog Lake SnoPark starting point is a popular dog sled practice area, so you will see gorgeous athletic doggies running in unison--Mush! And to top it all off, the route follows the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail for a good ways so you can brag to all your friends that you did the PCT in winter! (PCT means absolutely no snowmobiles--Woo-HOO!)

WHAT: Easy snowshoe of approx. 6 miles round trip and 500 elevation gain, to Upper and Lower Twin Lakes from Frog Lake SnoPark. http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mthood/recreati ... ions.shtml

WHEN: 7 AM, Saturday, April 4, 2009. We'll be departing at 7, so get there early to snag a carpool seat. [This has changed due to everybody meeting at the Sno-Park; PM me if you want to join us.]

WHERE: The Safeway parking lot at 2501 SW Cherry Park Rd., Troutdale, OR, 97060. Go east on 84, take exit 16 and go south (right), go up one mile and take a left at the Cherry Rd./Glisan light, turn left at the Safeway sign and look for us in the middle, near the Godfather's Pizza. I'll be in a big, silver Silverado (I just love irony of that.) [This has changed due to everybody meeting at the Sno-Park; PM me if you want to join us.]

WHO: Folks with snowshoes who are Jonesing for one last romp in the white stuff; canines welcome. Keep in mind that we will occasionally be around dog sled teams, so bring the strong leash and hang on!

HOW: All drivers, get yourself a SnoPark Pass at Joe's or REI or the DMV. All riders, get yourself some ready cash to thank your driver. Check the weather and dress accordingly. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.ph ... it=0&lg=en There are restrooms at the trail head. Binoculars are always encouraged, as is chocolate--I can almost guarantee you'll be sharing both--right, Caleb? I'm stowing a hot beverage in the car for when I get back along with a change of clothes and footwear. Follow my lead and enjoy the ride home a lot more.

WHY: To give the ol' snowshoes one last fling before you pack 'em away. We're gonna top off the '08 - '09 winter season with a flourish!

YAY, snowshoeing! I've only been out ONCE this winter and I'm feeling really guilty about it.. so I'm in (if I get the day off).

I'd suggest somewhere on St. Helens since it's close.. but I'm guessing that's probably been done to death (same for Mt. Hood). I saw a lot of snow parks along route 22 and around Sisters that I wanted to try but didn't have time to.. but I have no idea if they've got views.

That's all I've got for now..

OK, we've got a date and a time. Now all we need is a trail. Anyone, anyone? Bueller?

OK, this trip is ready to go! I'm scouting out a carpool spot today on 26, I'll be adding that later tonight. Ladies and gentlemen, start your snowshoes!

Hmm...if there are no takers on this one by 3/24, I'm going to cancel it.

Hey Anna, can count me in. I'm pretty much a beginner on snowshoes, but this sounds like a nice easy trek, so I'll do my best not to slow you down to much. :)
