How far can a person hike now...with the closure? can I still hike down to the tunnel? which part is "closed" for the season -just curious how far it is from the TH up to the lookout and back (not going down to the lower section)? or down to the tunnel and back to the TH?
(wondering if the lookout is about 1/2 way on the regular loop, or not)
thanks for any response!
happy hiking

Re: Cape Horn ?'s
I've not hiked that stretch myself, but I'm looking at the map that was linked here and it sure looks like the tunnel area is well within the closed section. Looks like a problem to me.Reckless wrote:here ya go! http://www.capehorntrail.org/trailmap.html

The railroad tunnel is definitely in the closed section. The two tunnels under Hwy 14 are not.MrUncas wrote:I've not hiked that stretch myself, but I'm looking at the map that was linked here and it sure looks like the tunnel area is well within the closed section. There's a railroad tunnel? Where abouts?
Last time I was there (december-ish I think), only one hwy 14 underpass was done. The other one right at the trailhead was still being built, but it was easy to cross the road back to the parking lot.

The lower section of the Cape Horn trail, the part closed from Feb to Jul, runs along the top of the lower cliff band in this photo.
The railroad runs underneath the trail in a tunnel.
