Pelicans! 11/18/22 Vancouver Lake

Post by ChrisA » November 19th, 2022, 7:45 am

We took advantage of the blue skies and went to Vancouver Lake. We hiked along the north trail, took a left to cross over a slough on a pedestrian bridge, crossed the road, walked along the edge of the field and then back into the park. Highlights were seeing pelicans on Vancouver Lake, along with egrets. We also saw bald eagles and sandhill cranes. There were also views of Mount St. Helens, Mt, Adams and Mt. Hood. Lowlights were a couple of camps on the north end, and broken glass along the road. Still a good day.

I'm surprised the pelicans are still around but maybe, being large birds, they didn't want to go on a long migration in the strong winds. They nest on the east side of the Cascades, but are now seen regularly in large flocks at Smith and Bybee Lakes and Sauvie Island in summer. Great sighting!
