Sleeping Beauty

Post by drm » October 18th, 2021, 1:35 pm

This short, steep, somewhat remote hike is best done in the afternoon when the sun is at the right angle, and clouds have more than likely cleared. This was from last Friday, Oct 15.

Still a few clouds when I got to the top around 3pm, a half hour earlier, the entire summit was hidden

Clouds cleared within 10 minutes, leaving just a nice thin lenticular crown

the rocky south face must make for a nice long class IV climb

When I was there, I wondered whether anyone ever tried to scramble up from Skull Creek. I felt like it might have been interesting to climb UP, but going down would be awful.

It's my understanding the sun's rays are at a right angle to earth's surface only at the equator. But I could be mistaken. :geek:

Any goats? Sometimes I see some, other times no.
Did you find the turtle grave? I couldn't find it last time.

The north side appears to have plenty of climbing potential too.

Adam - I went and looked on Summitpost, and they said this:
I've yet to see anyone enjoying rock climbing on this peak but the rock appears to be of good quality and very inviting for such activities.
Okay, oh.org climbers - give it a go and let us know!

I've only seen goats on SB once, and I think that was the time years ago when I spent the night and camped up there. They were not on top, but were below the old lookout site, a couple hundred feet down. Maybe they could tell us what the best climbing route is - if only a goat could talk (or we could understand).

Nice report, Dean, it brought back memories of my hike there last year. Hopefully it's not bad form to add some pics since I didn't file a trail report.
It's a long drive from Portland to take such a short hike but there's other trails nearby that we hiked. This is a steep hike and as mentioned some loose rock everywhere as well as some tripping roots.

There was no water on the trail but Buddy discovered a secret source.

Looking at elaborate trail work, makes you think you may be in Michu Picchu. First is view looking up at top and second is looking back down at your route.

All in all, well worth the drive but walking the narrow ridgeline is not for the faint of heart (or old men like me).

The rock near the SUMMIT looks pretty nice, but that southeast-facing gully may be a different story.
